Support tomorrow: build your expertise as you develop flood defences

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation's investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Each of our 14 regions has its own Programmes team, which works in partnership with local authorities and other organisations to balance the risk of floods and coastal erosion with supporting economic growth, the wellbeing of our communities and the environment. By adding local insights to the development and planning of work, you'll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

Taking charge of your own smaller projects, while supporting more senior colleagues on major programmes, means you'll have every opportunity to develop your project management skills. From initial strategic planning, through feasibility and detailed design, to implementation, construction and handover, you'll experience every aspect of the delivery process. You'll see how we work closely with our supply partners, and build strong relationships inside and outside the organisation, as well as how we negotiate agreements, gain approval and secure external funding. Our training and development, and support for professional membership, with help you grow.

The person

You're likely to have a degree in an engineering, environmental or geography discipline or, alternatively, some practical experience in a project or programme delivery environment. If you hold a qualification in Prince 2, APM or another recognised project management methodology, so much the better, but this can form part of your development plan. Experience of financial and commercial controls would be useful. You'll also be a great communicator and champion of good practice, ready to learn and able to work collaboratively.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We'll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
