The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation's investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Each of our 14 regions has its own Programmes team, which works in partnership with local authorities and other organisations to balance the risk of floods and coastal erosion with supporting economic growth, the wellbeing of our communities and the environment. By adding local insights to the development and planning of work, you'll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

Supporting more senior colleagues, you'll gain valuable insights into the way contracts with external suppliers are drawn up, negotiated and monitored. You'll be part of a team analysing performance against targets, and looking for ways to get better value for money. This role is all about interpreting financial data, spotting issues and reaching solutions, whilst maintaining positive working relationships. There's lots to learn and, as you grow in confidence, we'll support your ambitions and ensure you can use your experience as a spring-board for your future. Expect training and development that helps you grow professionally. We will also pay your fees for one professional membership.

The person

We're looking for someone with basic administrative experience, who feels confident working with financial data and other information. Some accountancy training or experience of Sage would be helpful. You'll know your way around Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and are likely to hold a GCSE / O Level in Maths or a business-related subject. As you'll be working with a wide range of contacts across the Environment Agency, it's important that you're positive, enjoy helping colleagues and take pride in your work. You'll also be focused on results and will have the organisational skills to work effectively to deadlines.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We'll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
