Secure tomorrow: guide the programmes that will shape our future

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation's investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Our Projects and Programme Management team keeps us on track as we turn these ideas into reality. By ensuring we stay on schedule and on budget, and introducing innovative approaches, systems and technologies to increase our effectiveness, you'll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

You'll take the long view on programme development, creating local scenario plans to inform future investment, supporting the development of strategic approaches to future flood risk management and securing partnership funding for priority projects. Working closely with project delivery teams, including local authorities, you'll advise on risks and opportunities and will be focused on improving efficiency and productivity. We'll also look to you to gather and analyse significant data, and report back on the performance of different programmes and programme elements.

The person

An experienced programming practitioner, ideally with a technical background, you'll be capable of leading and supporting others in the delivery of programmes. Coaching and mentoring skills will also be important to get the best out of the people around you. Well organised yet flexible, you can adapt to changing priorities, and enjoy working with diverse customers. Strong data management skills are essential, with the ability to interpret large data sets, particularly in Microsoft Excel. Innovative and decisive and with strong communication skills, you'll be ready for your next challenge.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We'll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
